What BMW EV Models Are Available?

The BMW brand currently offers four EV models, including i4, i5, iX, and i7. You can find a broad range of model options with various configurations and body styles to consider. Whether looking for a maneuverable luxury sedan or a family-friendly SUV, you can discover a new BMW EV that checks all the boxes for you in the current lineup.

  • BMW i4: As a compact luxury sedan, the new i4 is the smallest and lowest-priced EV in the BMW EV lineup, making it an excellent choice for daily commuters and as an entry-level model to the EV lineup.
  • BMW i5: If you're interested in more interior space while retaining a sleek, agile frame, the midsize i5 could be right for you.
  • BMW iX: The iX is the sole SUV model in the BMW EV lineup at this time, offering a spacious, adaptable interior and added versatility.
  • BMW i7: The new i7 offers a roomy interior, cutting-edge technology, and athletic power as an impressive full-size luxury sedan.

Is BMW Experienced in Manufacturing Batteries?

The BMW Group has been manufacturing batteries for electric vehicles since 2013 and responsibly sources raw materials from leading suppliers for battery cell production. BMW is constantly researching and developing battery technology, and the current generation of battery-electric vehicles reflects its commitment to innovation and reliability.

What is the Battery Lifespan in an All-Electric BMW?

There isn't an exact number since battery life can vary with the ambient temperature, number of cycles, and battery age. BMW provides an eight-year (or 100,000-mile) battery warranty that includes coverage for excessive battery capacity loss.

What are Dual Electric Motors?

Dual electric motors are when a vehicle has two separate electric motors driving the wheels. When a BMW electric vehicle has dual electric motors, it has more power and all-wheel drive capability. One electric motor drives the front wheels, while the other drives the rear wheels.

What is Brake Energy Regeneration?

Regenerative braking technology lets BMW EVs recoup part of their energy during deceleration and braking and stores the energy in the battery for later use.

What Savings Can I Expect with an Electric Vehicle Compared to a Gas-Powered Vehicle?

BMW EVs have fewer moving parts and fluids to repair and replace, ensuring lower lifetime maintenance costs. You can save money in the long term without requiring maintenance like oil changes. BMW estimates that you can save up to $1,999 annually on fuel costs. If that wasn't enough, it's possible to take advantage of the EV tax credit, which can be as high as $7,500.

What is the Range on an Electric BMW, and Will I be able to Charge on the Go?

The BMW EV lineup provides impressive driving ranges and convenient charging capabilities. BMW electric vehicles offer various charging methods, letting you charge at home or public charging stations.

The current ranges available for the BMW EV lineup include:

  • BMW i4 eDrive40: Up to 301 miles
  • BMW i4 M50: Up to 269 miles
  • BMW i5 eDrive40: Up to 294 miles
  • BMW i5 M60: Up to 267 miles
  • BMW iX xDrive50: Up to 324 miles
  • BMW iX M60: Up to 280 miles
  • BMW i7 xDrive60: Up to ~300 miles
  • BMW i7 eDrive50: Up to 321 miles

The EPA and US Department of Energy have not yet released estimates for the 2022 BMW iX M60 and the 2023 i7 xDrive60. Preliminary BMW AG tests estimate the ranges for the iX M60 and i7 xDrive60 based on the EPA's test procedure standards. All of these ranges are attainable when fully charged and under ideal driving conditions. The actual ranges may vary depending on various factors, such as the outside temperature, driving style, and traffic conditions.

What are All-Electric BMWs like to Drive?

BMW electric vehicles continue BMW's performance legacy while providing unique all-electric benefits. The instant torque response and linear acceleration of the electric motor make for powerful acceleration that will push you back in your seat since BMW EVs have as much torque at a standstill as they do at high speeds.

As expected from the BMW brand, all BMW electric vehicles offer exceptional balance with near-perfect 50/50 weight distributions, leading to fun-to-drive handling, precise steering, and exceptional driving dynamics.

What Safety Features Do Electric BMWs Have?

BMW EVs offer highly sophisticated safety technologies for more peace of mind on the road. With advanced radar, sensors, and cameras monitoring surroundings and traffic patterns, BMW electric vehicles add convenience and awareness to your daily driving. As you explore the new BMW EV lineup, you can find impressive safety and driver assistance features like lane-departure warning, emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, and cross-traffic alerts.

Do I Need Special Equipment to Charge My BMW Electrified Vehicle?

Extra equipment isn't required to charge your BMW EV since all battery-electric BMW models come with the Flexible Fast Charger. This portable device is compatible with any 120V or 240V outlet, offering convenient, optimized charging. You can charge from 0-100 percent in under 12 hours at a 240V outlet, letting you recharge the battery overnight.

The optional BMW Wallbox lets you enjoy fast charging and convenience at home. A professional electrician can install the BMW Wallbox in your garage or outdoors with its weather-proof design for Level 2 charging at 9.6 kW charging speed.

No additional equipment is required if you want to charge at a public charging station. Public charging stations adhere to the standardized charging system in North America, called CCS (for DC Fast Charging) and J1772 (for L2 charging). Your BMW EV's navigation and the My BMW app can show you public charging stations equipped with fast charging and Level 2 plugs.

Can I Initiate Charging Remotely?

The My BMW App lets you set your departure time, and your EV will charge accordingly when you are charging at home. You can also use the app to pre-condition your vehicle to ensure an optimized battery temperature and that your cabin climate is comfortable before departure.

How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric BMW at a Public Charging Station?

The charging time depends on several factors, including the maximum charging output, battery size, and the remaining charge left in the battery. Home and Level 2 charging often take longer than DC fast charging at public stations. For example, the BMW i4 charges about 30 miles per hour with a Level 2 charger, while a DC fast charger can charge up to 108 miles in just ten minutes.

What is Pre-Conditioning, and Why is It Important?

Pre-conditioning is important since it optimizes battery efficiency. All BMW EVs have a pre-conditioning function, and you can use the My BMW app to warm the cabin and battery before departing.
